Food, Agriculture, and the Environment: Call for Papers
"Man's attitude toward nature is today critically important simply because we
have now acquired a fateful power to alter and destroy nature."
-- Rachel Carson
As our food and water supplies becomes threatened by mono-crop production,
genetically modified organisms, rendered feed and unsanitary conditions in
feedlots and packing plants, and, in general, pollution of the environment from
various chemicals, our attitudes about the land we live off of must change. We
seek papers that explore the fundamental concepts of Western civilization that
have permitted the triumph of global technologies to the detriment of local
landscapes and that have produced unparalleled occurrences of disease and
illness. What does the current situation of our food supply say about our
relationship to the environment and to animals? How must these relationships be
re-thought in order to undo the harm that has been caused to our food system and
to the environment? Papers that explore "spiritual" answers to these questions
are particularly encouraged.
For consideration, please send an abstract of 750 words or less describing your
possible presentation. In addition, please include info about yourself:
past/present university positions, publications or description of research, and
contact info. Papers are acceptable in English and Spanish. The proceedings of
this panel will potentially appear in a collection published by a major
scholarly press.
