Anthropology and Literature in the Study of Food: Call for Papers
Literature and Anthropology have been closely associated as disciplines since
the work of George Markus, James Clifford, and Clifford Geertz. These
anthropologists problematized ethnographic writing and fieldwork by employing
questions being raised in literary theory about the relationship of the author
to the text and about the politics and situatedness of textual production at the
site of cultural contact with an Other. Recently, professors of literature have
begun adopting the techniques of their colleagues in anthropology, and English
Departments now offer courses in American culture, popular culture, the history
of ideas, and food studies. We seek papers that theorize or demonstrate, through
research on a topic in food studies, how literature and anthropology work
together in the study of food and culture.
Possible questions include:
* What unites the study of literature and anthropology? What perspective does
each discipline have on storytelling and/or representation?
* What is it about the study of food that demands that these two disciplines
work together? How does each discipline bring different and complimentary
questions to the food studies table?
* How do interdisciplinary methods of research relying on both literature and
anthropology benefit food studies scholarship?
* How important is ethnographic work to the study of food and culture? What
methodological issues do researchers struggle with when gathering and using
ethnographic data?
For consideration, please send an abstract of 750 words or less describing your
possible presentation. In addition, please include info about yourself:
past/present university positions, publications or description of research, and
contact info. Papers are acceptable in English and Spanish. The proceedings of
this panel will potentially appear in a collection published by a major
scholarly press.
