CALL FOR PAPERS
Food, Ontology, and the Senses: Food Studies Takes on Descartes
"[M]ore so than the theoretical cooking time indicated in the recipe, it is the
smell coming from the oven that lets one know if the cooking is coming along and
whether it might help to turn up the temperature"
-- Michel de Certeau, et al. The Practice of Everyday Life, vol. 2
We are seeking proposals for papers that present research in food studies that
is focused on the priority and importance of the senses (i.e. the body as a site
of experience and knowledge), or that deals with embodied knowledge in cooking
practices. These research projects should explore how ways of being can be
linked to the senses in a manner that undoes the Cartesian mind-body split (not
"I think therefore I am" but, for example, "I taste therefore I am") or calls
the Cartesian dichotomy into question through the study of food.
For consideration, please send an abstract of 750 words or less describing your
possible presentation. In addition, please include info about yourself:
past/present university positions, publications or description of research, and
contact info. Papers are acceptable in English and Spanish. The proceedings of
this panel will potentially appear in a collection published by a major
scholarly press.
