CALL FOR PAPERS
Food Icons and Advertising: Mark(et)ing Subjectivities
"What was then being formed was a policy of coercions that act upon the body, a
calculated manipulation of its elements, its gestures, its behaviour. The human
body was entering a machinery of power that explores it, breaks it down and
rearranges it."
-- Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish
We seek papers on classic and contemporary food icons for a panel on food
advertising that employs theories of cultural critics like Michel Foucault,
Michel de Certeau, Stuart Hall, or Roland Barthes to discuss how the media
frames various issues in food production, consumption, and distribution and
consequently constructs consumer subjectivity. Icons such as Aunt Jemima and
Betty Crocker are of particular interest. We also seek papers that explore
advertising campaigns, either single food commercials of interest or entire
commercial food campaigns, like the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" series.
Presentations that investigate marketing of food products to kids, tweens, and
teens would be especially welcome. We are interested in questions about how the
media shapes our thinking on food and bodies especially by employing ideas like
Foucault's notion of disciplinary power to talk about how institutions exert
power over bodies in the construction of subjectivities.
For consideration, please send an abstract of 750 words or less describing your
possible presentation. In addition, please include info about yourself:
past/present university positions, publications or description of research, and
contact info. Papers are acceptable in English and Spanish. The proceedings of
this panel will potentially appear in a collection published by a major
scholarly press.
