Second METU Conference on International Relations: Regional Perspectives 

CALL FOR PAPERS 

The Department of International Relations at Middle East Technical 
University (METU) calls for proposals for preorganised panels, roundtables 
and individual papers for the Second Annual meeting, June 23-25, 2003, in 
Ankara, Turkey. 

General Framework 

The first METU Conference on International Relations ended with a call for 
interdisciplinary/interregional approaches as they pertain to issues in 
world politics and to area studies. We hope that this years conference, 
the Regional Studies Conference, will be primarily concerned with this 
call. The Middle East, the Caucasus and the Balkans will be the main focus 
of this conference, as well as the European and American perspectives on 
these regions. Paper and panel proposals on issues related to the Middle 
East, the Balkans and the Caucasus are welcome. Comparative work is 
encouraged. We hope to see panels discussing how global, national and 
other actors cope with various socio-political challenges in these three 
regions. We hope that the Conference will contribute to establishing 
contacts among scholars and practitioners from different parts of the 
world.

Paper/Panel Proposals 

All proposals for papers and panels should be submitted before May 2, 
2003. Submissions after this date may take time and complicate the 
consideration process. 

A paper proposal should include: 

1) the paper/panel title 
2) a short abstract including methodology, main assumptions and 
conclusions of the paper (200 words maximum) 
3) author/participant name(s) and institutional affiliations 
4) author/participant e-mail address(es), telephone and fax 
5) Any audio-visual equipment requests (if applicable) 

The Conference Committee encourages electronic submissions, by email or by 
webform (the webform can be found at:

However, those who do have limited access to electronic media, can send 
their proposals via fax provided that the proposal deadline is observed. 

Conference Timetable 

May 2, 2003 - Final date for submission of abstracts 

May 16, 2003 - Authors will be informed of acceptance of abstracts for 
presentation. 

June 2, 2003 - Last day for pre-registration (A late registration fee 
will be charged after this date.) 

June 13, 2003 - Final date for submission of papers 

June 23-25, 2003 - Conference 

Papers written in English and Turkish are welcome.

* Registration Fee on arrival: U.S. $55 

A few scholarships particularly for student participants are available for 
registration expenses. Please contact the IR Conference Center address

Accommodations: 

Around 150 single rooms will be available at Ebi Student Guest House at METU 
for reasonable prices (approximately for $10-$15).
