GENERAL FRAMEWORK
The METU Conference on
International Relations, one of the oldest annual conferences in Turkey on
international relations, will be held between 25-27 June 2014, marking its 13th
year. This year’s conference will occasion the 30th anniversary of the establishment
of the Department of International Relations at METU. The Conference takes
pride in annually bringing together scholars from all around the world to
exchange views. The confirmed speakers for this year’s conference include Emeritus
Professor Barry Buzan (London School of Economics and Political Science), Professor
Andrew Linklater (Woodrow Wilson Chair, Aberystwyth University), Professor Ali
Karaosmanoğlu (Center for Foreign Policy and Peace Research, Ankara) and
Professor Yongjin Zhang (University of Bristol).
The theme of this year’s
conference is Multiple Paradigms Multiple
Worlds focusing upon the theoretical and practical plurality of the
discipline. The conference aims to provide a broad framework for scholars,
policy-makers and experts who work on different approaches in International
Relations and on various aspects of international relations. It will form a platform
for discussion of multiple practices from multiple perspectives. The themes of
the conference will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Multiplicity of
paradigms and multi-faceted nature of IR
Single paradigm vs
multiple paradigms
Mainstream approaches
(realism, liberalism, English school, marxism) and their variants
New approaches
(critical, constructivist, postmodern, feminist, greene, post-colonial, etc.)
Western (European and
American) perspectives
Non-Western perspectives
(Chinese, Indian, Islamic, etc.)
Inter-state interactions
(diplomacy, international law, balance of power, IGOs, etc.)
War, peace and violence
The world of non-state
practices (NGOs, MNCs, etc.)
Security and strategy
Culture, Civilisation
and Identity
Polities and
collectivities (states, empires, governance bodies, nations, ethnic and
religious groupings)
PAPER ABSTRACTS /PANEL
PROPOSALS
The Conference invites
abstracts for individual papers or complete panel proposals. All abstracts and
panel proposals should be submitted before 1 April 2014.
APPLICATION INFORMATION
An application should
include:
1. The paper/panel title
2. A short abstract
including methodology, main assumptions and conclusions of paper (2500
characters maximum)
3. Author/participant
name(s) and institutional affiliations
4. A one paragraph
biographical statement of each participant (not a detailed CV)
5. Author/participant
e-mail addresses (essential), telephone and fax numbers
6. Any audio-visual
equipment requests (if applicable)
The Conference Committee
encourages electronic submissions through irconf at metu.edu.tr email address.
However, those who have limited access to electronic communication facilities
can send their proposals via fax provided that the proposal deadline is
observed.
CONFERENCE TIMETABLE
1 April 2014: Final date
for submission of panel proposals and paper abstracts
15 April 2014: Authors
will be informed of acceptance of their applications
25 May 2014: Last day
for registration (A late registration fee will be charged after this date)

Post-Conference tour to Cappadocia (optional)
VENUE
The Conference will be
held at the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Economics and
Administrative Sciences B-Building, Middle East Technical University, Ankara,
Turkey.
POST-CONFERENCE TOUR
For those interested,
there will be a post-conference tour to Cappadocia between June-28-29 on their
own expenses. The details of the post-conference tour will be announced later.

Fees
Registration Fee: € 100
Student Fee: € 50
Registration Fee on
Arrival: € 150
Registration fee include
reception, conference dinner, refreshments and conference materials. Those who
do not wish to make use of these facilities may participate to the panels as
listeners without any payment.
FUNDING
A few scholarships,
particularly for student participants, are available for registration and
accommodation expenses. Please contact the Conference Secretariat for further
information.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation costs will
be covered by the participants. Details of the accommodation information will
be provided to the participants after the acceptance of the paper proposals.
TRAVEL
Travel costs will be
covered by the participants. Details of the travel information and how to reach
to Ankara and the venue will be available here.
