Dear Colleagues,
We would like to call your attention and invite potential contributors
to our Panel on "On the Islands of Oblivion? - Identity concepts of
the Turkic peoples after 1991", leading: PD Dr. Michael Reinhard Heß,
Dr. Gülschen Sahatova (FU-Berlin, Institut für Turkologie) at the
conference "31th German Congress of Oriental Studies 2010" in Marburg,
Germany. It will be held September 20-24, 2010.
We would encourage participation by historians, philologists
(linguists and literature scholars), sociologists, cultural studies as
well as religion scholars and political scientists, journalists and
others as welcome potential contributors. Here is the abstract of the
Panel, following:
The collapse of the multi-ethnic Soviet empire in 1991 was as big a
surprise for its constituent peoples as for the rest of the world. All
of a sudden, the post-Soviet ethnic groups were faced with the
challenge to set out in search of new identities. As a result, a
number of sometimes extravagant or even seemingly fantastic identity
concepts were created, some of which drew on the most distant layers
of history. Such efforts made by individual ethnic groups in order to
shape new identities from autochthonous traditions, or to bring back
to life old ones, were rivaled by attempts to gain influence
undertaken by international, both governmental and non-governmental,
actors and, last but not least, by the still powerful "old elites". We
will try to throw a glance at a number of case studies illustrating
the conflicting priorities of tradition and departure, continuity and
change. In doing so we will focus on the Turkic peoples of the former
Soviet Union, but at the same time be open for contributions
concerning Turkey as well as non-Turkic Eurasian peoples. The topical
main thread of this panel will be the question of how the language,
literature, arts, religion and politics of these peoples have become a
theatre for the change of identity during the past two decades.
