Baku Slavic University co-jointly with Azerbaijan Comparative
Literature Association seeks papers, panel and roundtable proposals from
scholars and doctoral students for interdisciplinary conference to be held
at the Baku Slavic University on October 22-23, 2010. The conference is the
part of project on criteria of national culture and literature. Creation of
the new countries assumes strengthening of consciousness of national
identity, definition of national attribution of literary and cultural facts.
Among them is circulation of the same motives, situation, the same symbols,
plots.
Possible range of research questions concerns both constructed over
centuries and relatively new archetype plots, situations by different
authors, of different periods and national literatures, such as Romeo and
Juliet by Italian and English playwrights, Leili and Mejnoun by Azerbaijani,
Persian and Uzbek poets, Doctor Faust by German and English author,
archetypes created by different authors in diverse periods and national
literature, as Biblical plots in literary fiction by Russian, Kyrgyz and
Azerbaijani writers, or adaptation of Italian Pinocchio as Buratino, or
English Winnie the Pooch as Vinni Pookh by Russian culture? Another
question is how to consider “nationality” in construction of a tale, or epic
with the same requirement of magic power of the hero to overcome the
compulsory tests? How to distinguish the song with verses by Mowlana and
music by American author? What about mugham motive Bayaty- Shiraz by
Iohan Bach?
Other possible themes and questions raised can be as such: How does
translation studies influence migration of plots? How to define
“nationality” of “Kalila and Dimna”, the Arabic translation of the Indian
“Panchatatra” tales?
Forms of archetypes has changed and continues to changes from a
migrant plot to fan-fiction, and moving from folklore to movie, from
literature to music, from music to movie, creating hyper-text.
Taking into consideration above mentioned, the question arises: “Where are
the borders between an original text, influences and plagiarism?”
We welcome papers from participants from all areas relevant to Literary
and Cultural Studies with special focus on* the following *topics:
Definition and classification, types of archetype
National attribution and origin of literary and cultural archetypes
Interpretation of the same archetype situation or motive by various authors
(Eugenie Onegin, Anna Karenina; Leila and Mejnoun by Nizami, Fizuli, etc.)
Archetype as a plot, a theme, a motive
Archetype as a symbol
Archetype and plagiarism
Archetype and Fan-fiction
Archetype and Hypertext
Reception of archetypes in different cultures
Reception of archetypes in different periods of history
The scope of proposals may extend to any issues and approaches of the
above-mentioned themes and questions. *Roundtable* is supposed to be on the
theme “Fan-fiction and archetype?” with moderating of graduate students of
Baku Slavic University.
Working languages of the conference are Azerbaijani, Russian and
English. Selected
panelists and speakers must cover their own travel cost to participate in
the conference.
Paper proposals (200-word abstract for a paper to last 15 minutes,
brief CV, contact information) are due by April 15, 2010 and should be sent
