Information about the Lecture:

Human rights represent universal values, and modern international law
imposes certain non-derogable legal obligations on sovereign states to
protect and promote civil liberties and political rights, social and
economic rights, and cultural rights, as the foundational values for
the development of procedural and substantive democracy. This lecture
places the development of human rights in Armenia within a long
historical perspective and contends human rights values and customary
practices require centuries of development. Although the Armenian
people inhabited their ancestral homeland for more three millennia,
they nevertheless lived as subject people under Ottoman, Persian, and
Russian rule for centuries. Prior to the republic of 1918, the last
Armenian government, the Cilician kingdom, had collapsed in 1375, and
Armenians lacked their own statehood. This analysis juxtaposes the
history of Armenia with the history and evolution of international
human rights standards. To what extent can the post-Soviet Armenian
society develop political, economic, cultural, and social institutions
that promote and protect fundamental human rights?
