[Bilimsel Haber] Panel CfP: "History and Memory of Turkish Migration to Western Europe", (Lisbon, February 28- March 1 2008)

[Onur Inal]

Dear all,

Turkish migration to Western Europe is widely studied today, but
historical research and debate on the issue is still limited. At the
next European Social Science History Conference (Lisbon, February 28-
March 1 2008), we aim to add to the historical perspective with the
panel 'history and memory of Turkish migration to Western Europe'.
Please find the full panel proposal below.

If you are interested in participation in the panel, you are cordially
invited to send a paper proposal of 1/2 page to Leen Beyers,
leen.beyers at arts.kuleuven.be, or Floris Vermeulen, f.f.vermeulen at uva.nl
by March 1 2007. Pre-registration for the ESSHC can happen afterwards,
at the ESSHC website: http://www.iisg.nl/esshc.

HISTORY AND MEMORY OF TURKISH MIGRATION TO WESTERN EUROPE, PANEL ESSHC
2008, organizers: Leen Beyers and Floris Vermeulen

This panel aims to bring together new research on Turkish migration to
Western Europe that is historically sensitive in one of the following
three ways: first, by putting generational changes at the heart of the
analysis, or, second, by dealing with historically specific conditions
of migration and settlement - for instance the waning of the guest
worker policies since the 1970s, the transnational tensions surrounding
Islam since the 1980s or geographical differences in Turkey as well as
in Western Europe -, or, third, by discussing memory processes with
regard to Turkish migration to Western Europe. Of course, 'Turkey' and
'Western Europe' are working categories to be discussed and differences
between different 'Turkish' people in terms of class, gender, religion
or ethnicity should be central to the debate.
