This conference focuses on eastern Anatolia during the fourteenth and
fifteenth centuries, a period spanning from the final decades of Mongol
rule under the Ilkhanids to the eve of the Ottoman-Safavid conflict at
the beginning of the sixteenth century. The political history of eastern
Anatolia during this period remains relatively unexplored in comparison
not only to the better known periods under the Seljuks and Ottomans, but
also in comparison to the less well known history of the contemporary
neighboring principalities in western Anatolia. Much of the difficulty
in dealing with the history of this region originates from its extreme
political fragmentation and the rise of numerous local dynasties
following the collapse of Mongol power in the mid-fourteenth century.
Although Eastern Anatolia witnessed long periods of political
instability and conflict during this period as it became embroiled in
the ongoing conflicts between states, such as the series of wars between
the Mamluks and Ilkhanids, and later, between the Timurids and Ottomans
in their rival claims of sovereignty, its cultural life nevertheless
appears to have flourished and developed at various local centers. Yet
parallel to our difficulties in comprehending the region's complex
political landscape is that of accounting for the rich cultural
production in this region; indeed our understanding of this phenomenon
in its broader historical context remains rudimentary.

>From a broad historical and art historical perspective, this conference
seeks to present new approaches to and reconsiderations of the evolution
of art and architecture. The role played by local centers of power in
cultural production will be re-examined as well as the local
interactions and connections with surrounding cultural areas. By
comparison and/or opposition with the latter, eastern Anatolia is
reconsidered as a specific geographical, political and cultural entity.
New and original perspectives are likewise introduced, especially in
regard to the concepts of decline and renewal in artistic production. In
this context the transfer of artistic ideas and technical skills takes
on particular importance. Another essential matter is the dissemination
of aesthetic idioms characterized by new patterns and designs in
fourteenth and fifteenth-century eastern Anatolia.
