Les Ottomans en Egypte. Historiens et conquérants au XVIe siècle.
Paris,Louvain, Dudley MA: Peeters (coll. Turcica vol. XI), 2006, XXIX+423 p
Using Turkish, Arabic and Italian primary sources, the book shows how the Ottomans who had vanquished the Mamluks in 1517 established their rule in Egypt. Reducing the country to a province promoted the renewal of the ruling elite and the containment of political violence. The new masters assumed the Mamluk legacy and their historians built upon the chronicles of the former power; but they had to justify a war of conquest waged against an old center of Arab/Islamic civilization.
By going back and forth between history and historiography, light is shed on the impact provincialization exerted on the writing of history in Arabic and Turkish, on the identity of the ruling elite and on the task of legitimization of the political power. Particular attention is devoted to a magnificent and forgotten chronicle which 'Abdussamed Diyarbekri wrote in Turkish in the 1540's; excerpts of this text are given here in a bilingual edition.
