Using Turkish, Arabic and Italian primary sources, the book shows how the Ottomans who had vanquished the Mamluks in 1517 established their rule in Egypt. Reducing the country to a province promoted the renewal of the ruling elite and the containment of political violence. The new masters assumed the Mamluk legacy and their historians built upon the chronicles of the former power; but they had to justify a war of conquest waged against an old center of Arab/Islamic civilization.
