University of the Middle East Project: Summer Internships
The long term vision of the Center for Higher Education in the Middle East, Inc. is the creation of a permanent network of interconnected academic centers throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) dedicated to the educational development of the region, and the promotion of cross-cultural exchange, regional cooperation and respect for the equal human dignity of all people from all MENA communities.
During its nine years of existence, the University of the Middle East Project has implemented programs in Boston, USA, Casablanca and Rabat, Morocco, and Toledo, Spain in the fields of Teacher Education, Education Leadership, Conflict Resolution, and Civic Engagement. Participants of these programs are secondary school teachers from throughout the Middle East and North Africa who engage in an intensive one-month educational experience. UME programs are designed to enhance academic and practical skills, as well as to promote open communication and mutual respect and understanding.
PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION AT: http://www.ume.org
UME interns will work closely with UME Staff and Faculty to implement a program focusing on teacher education during the summer of 2006 at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA, USA. Participants are 28 secondary school teachers from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia.
Duties will include program administration, facilitating cultural understanding, logistical support, event planning, and research. Boston based graduate students with concentrations in education and experience teaching high school students are preferred, as well as speakers of Arabic, Hebrew, and the Berber languages of Morocco and Algeria.
Students and graduates of other disciplines such as international relations, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, cultural studies, conflict negotiation/transformation, as well as the arts and music of the MENA region are also encouraged to apply.
UME does not provide housing in Boston during the summer. Interns are also required to have an interview in person with UME staff at the Cambridge offices. Academic Credit can be arranged with your department or advisor.
This is a wonderful opportunity with an exciting organization, where an intern assumes a lot of responsibility and can have a profound effect on the organization and its activities.
