The Department of Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology at American
University-Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic would like to
invite students pursuing degrees in Anthropology, Folklore, or
Linguistics to consider spending a semester or year studying in
Bishkek. The department and the university have excellent permanent
and visiting faculty offering courses in ethnography, archaeology,
cultural anthropology theory, Central Asian cultures and history,
applied anthropology, Russian and Kyrgyz languages. There are annual
ethnographic and archaeological fieldwork trips each summer. The
program has strong connections with local and international scholars,
and there are many opportunities to work on research and applied
anthropology projects in the region.
Bishkek is a cosmopolitan city with a wide range of international
organizations pursuing development work and supporting social
programs. The students of AUCA come from throughout Asia and create a
uniquely supportive, friendly environment. Every year, numerous
international students also come to AUCA from Europe, North American
and East Asia to take advantage of this special cultural and
educational environment.
The academic year at AUCA begins in late August and ends in mid-May.
One of the best universities in the Central Asian region, AUCA has
over 1100 students on a campus in the city center, with a library,
computer laboratories, and cafes. The campus is surrounded by parks,
museums, and theatres. The small size of the university and small
class-size means students get personal attention and professors are
readily available for consultation. The university combines the best
of Central Asian hospitality and warmth with the serious research and
creative thinking of the American educational tradition. Academic
standards are extremely high, and graduates of AUCA hold important
positions throughout the Central Asian Region.
Faculty, staff and students in the university use English and Russian
equally, and in the Department of Cultural Anthropology and
Archaeology and the Department of Kyrgyz Language courses are also
taught in Kyrgyz. Campus life revolves around the many performances,
outings, and cafes on and off campus. Tuition at AUCA is extremely
affordable, and living expenses in Bishkek are much lower than in
North America or Europe. More information is available at the
university website: http://www.auca.kg/
