Call for Papers: ACSIS 2006 Conference: "Ideology, Literature, the Arts =
and National Identity and Development in the Islamic World," Villanova =
University, Pennsylvania (April 7-8, 2006).=20
The topic of the 23rd annual meeting of the American Council for the =
Study of Islamic Societies (ACSIS), to be held on April 7-8, 2006 at =
Villanova University is "Ideology, Literature, the Arts and National =
Identity and Development in the Islamic World."
=20
Over the last few centuries, throughout the Islamic World, which =
included and still includes Muslim and other empires and/or states, a =
number of national, ethnic, ideological and/or confessional-oriented =
movements developed as a result of both internal and external =
influences. They were promoted directly by the respective states as a =
means to strengthen unity or by groups of individuals affected by the =
policies of the respective states and were seeking some type of =
separation. The goal of this conference is to explore in a =
multi-disciplinary manner the influence of ideologies and related =
literature - academic, propagandistic, fictional, etc. - and arts upon =
and within the Islamic World and in the development of modern-day =
states.
=20
We invite proposals dealing with the following: Pan-Islamism, =
pan-Turkism, Wahhabism, Arab nationalism, Zionism, Marxism, socialism, =
totalitarianism, Kemalism (Ataturkism), Bourguibism, etc. as well as =
other related subjects.
=20
Please send abstracts by December 1, 2005 to: =20
