Essays in the New History of the Sword: Call for Papers
Location:	Germany

Central to the problematics of Western modernity is resolution of tension
between "the passions and the interests." University-based scholars and
independent researchers representing the widest possible range of
disciplinary
and methodological perspectives are invited to submit papers for a
peer-reviewed
collection of essays to be published in 2007 focused on fencing, dueling,
violence, and honor in their social, political, literary and aesthetic,
popular,
and technical contexts from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The duel as
formalized swordplay was a prominent part of the presentation of the
self as the
performance of an aesthetic expression of a male, elite ethical ideal,
bringing
together norms of violence and the rationalization of behavior, with
implications for cultural history of considerable chronological breadth,
and for
epistemology and ethics as well.
