CALL FOR PAPERS
PERFORMING IDENTITY
As part of the conference:
Sixth Annual New Voices Graduate Conference
Georgia State University (10/20/05 through 10/22/05)
We are interested in proposals for a featured panel that offer
theoretical and
practical perspectives on the (re)creation and structure of cultural mediums
(e.g. literature, television, cinema), which imitate and disseminate
constructions of identity. For instance, one could argue that various
forms of
media shape identity by creating and perpetuating stereotypes. This includes
television shows that project stereotypes towards specific
audiences,
resulting in the experiencing and/or negotiating of identity. How do such
stereotypes not only become the assumed voice for such groups but also
transpose
back into media? If they have an effect, how is the voice of the
marginalized
affected relative to the voice of those in control of the medium?
Send a 300-word abstract via e-mail by Friday, July 15 to Anthea Andrade,
aandrade1@bellsouth.net; please note any audio-visual equipment needs in
your
proposal.
