*"Constructing and Expressing Identities: A Cultural History Conference"*
Indiana University's History Graduate Student Assn. invites historians
or researchers in related fields to propose papers, panels of three
related papers, and roundtable discussions related to the theme of the
construction or expression of identity. Potential topics or frameworks
of analysis include, but are by no means limited to, explorations of the
following:
* research regarding identity and gender/sexuality
* monuments as an expression of national or group identity
* how the individual identifies her/hiself within the context of a
place, group, or nation
* how groups or nations assert their identity in an effort to attain
legitimacy within a given sphere
* issues of nationalism and/or ethnic conflict
* and the development of national identity and nation-building
Given this broad definition of "constructing identity," we welcome
submissions from all geographic and temporal perspectives.
The conference will take place on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Indiana
University, Bloomington, IN. The deadline for submissions is *February
15, 2005*. Please send an abstract of 250 words and a brief biographical
statement (including year, field of study, university affiliation, and
other relevant information). E-mail attachments are preferred, and may
be directed to either Ben Thorne (mbthorne@indiana.edu), Angela White
(angwhite@indiana.edu), or Janine Peterson (e-mail address provided
below). The format of the conference is a panel of three papers followed
by a commentator, so a draft of accepted papers will be needed two weeks
prior to the conference for the session commentator to prepare his or
her remarks.
