Call for Papers
Contributions to a book dealing with responses to and coverage of 9/11
in international media are being sought. So far, the volume is made up
of chapters on the US, British, Asian, German, Canadian, and Polish
media, among others. It would certainly be interesting to include a
chapter on Turkish media.
The volume will come out in English in book format. The deadline for
submitting a first draft is mid-December (a short extention is
negotiable, though). The paper (4,000-7,000 words) should be sent as a
word for windows document attached to an email message to this address:
tomaszpludowski@go2.pl. Final versions are expected by mid-February.
In order to make the volume more consistent, I am trying to suggest some
common themes in national contributions. Some of the things I am looking
for include:
-a short overview of national media, particularly the ones discussed in
the chapter (prominence, range of impact, audience profile, character of
medium, etc.)
-time and/or room devoted to coverage of 9/11 and its consequences
-some content analysis or discourse analysis
-frames applied
-the tone of coverage
-objectivity
-representative quotes
-attribution of responsibility for the attack
-possible change of tone/frame/attribution during the following weeks/mon=
ths
-possibly, coverage by both the quality press and at least one major TV
station
-any other aspect you deem useful
To give you some background information on the editor: I am a Polish
scholar specializing in political communication and media studies. My
PhD is in Sociology and my MA is in English, both from the University of
Lodz (one of top five public universities in Poland). At present I teach
in Collegium Civitas in Warsaw and at Akademia Swietokrzyska. I was
visiting scholar at NYU in 1998 and have taught in Britain and recently
at the Maastricht Center for Transatlantic Studies in the Netherlands.
My publications include 10 articles. At present, I am editing a volume
on "'9/11' in International Media" and one on "Mass Media, Elections,
and US Presidency". Both projects consist of chapters written by
international scholars.
