=91From Self to Shelf=92 is a one day conference sponsored by Balliol
College, Oxford, to investigate different national, social, political
and personal concepts of the public function, and public identity, of
the artist as a figure for cultural production, construction and
interpretation. The kinds of questions we would like to address include:
How is the life of an individual transformed into the life of an
=91artist=92? Has the role of the artist changed in an age of mechanical =
and
digital production? How is the identity of the artist taken up in the
formation of a national tradition and a national character, and how
might traditions of cultural nationalism be affected by an era of
globalization? How is the importance of an artist related to the
popularity or the monetary value of her work?

The concept of the artist ranges across all forms of cultural
production, from the skilled craftsperson to the impressionist painter
to the symbolist poet, and for this conference we invite papers on
multi- and interdisciplinary topics dealing with a range of media,
including literature, film, television, music, and comic books, to name
a few. Academics, graduate students, artists, biographers, authors,
curators, critics and artists are invited to submit proposals (no more
than 300 words) for 20 minute papers by April 30, 2005, to Monika Class
at self2shelf@gmail.com or by post to Monika Class, Holywell Manor,
Manor Road, Oxford, OX1 3UH.

The informal setting of the conference and the lack of concurrent
sessions will allow for cohesive group discussions of shared
developments throughout the day. More information regarding the details
of the day will be released in early 2005 on the conference website:
