The Studium Europy Wschodniej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (The Centre for
East European Studies of Warsaw University) and the Association for the
Study of Nationalities are organizing a Special Convention to be held in
Warsaw, July 18-21, 2004.

The Centre For Eastern Studies (OSW - OSRODEK STUDIOW WSCHODNICH) is the
hosting partner of the Special Convention. It is a Polish governmental
analytical institution entrusted with monitoring the current political,
economic and social situation in Central and Eastern Europe, The Balkans,
the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The Warsaw Special Convention will be held under the distinguished patronage
of the Rector Magnificus of Warsaw University, Professor Piotr Weglenski.

Participants from all over the world, especially experts on Central Asian,
Caucasian, Russian, East-Central European and Balkan affairs are expected to
take part. We expect a large number of scholars from the countries of the
former Soviet Union, Eastern and Central Europe and the Balkans.

Please Note that this Special Convention is distinct from the ASN Annual
World Convention, which will take place at Columbia University, New York, on
15-17 April 2004 (www.nationalities.org).

The Main Theme of the Convention is the fate of nationalities and of
national and nationalist ideas in a world of globalization and economic and
political integration. This includes the relation between national ideals
and the process of transformation in Central Asia, the Caucasus,
East-Central Europe and the Balkans, the question of political change and
democratization in the post-Soviet area, as well as the prospects for
systemic change in the post-communist world.

The Convention will be held just two months after Poland and the other more
advanced countries in the region join the EU while many other post-communist
states continue to move back to authoritarian rule, twelve years after the
fall of Communist system in East-Central Europe.

The Warsaw Special Convention will consider proposals on topics related to
national identity, nationalism, ethnic conflict and state-building in
Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and adjacent areas. The
Convention invites proposals for individual papers or for complete panels.

The Convention is inviting submissions of recent documentaries or feature
films and available in video (VHS or DVD) format. The videos selected for
the convention will be screened during regular panel slots and will be
followed by a discussion moderated by academic experts.

The Last Special Asn Convention, held in June 2002 in Forli, Italy was
organized by The Centro per l'Europa Centro Orientale e Balcanica,
University of Bologne.

Location

The Convention will be held at the Warsaw University campus in the centre of
Warsaw, at Krakowskie Przedmiescie street. The campus is formed by the
complex of classical buildings, most of which were built in 18. and 19.
centuries in order to satisfy the needs of Warsaw University and other
educational institutions. The main edifice, King Casimir's palace, was built
in the first half of the 17. century. Warsaw University itself was fouded in
1816. The location is surrounded by silhouettes of baroque churches,
situated along the Royal Way, in the vicinity of the Royal Castle and the
Old City.

Schedule

The convention will begin on Sunday evening, July 18, and end on Wednesday
evening, July 21, 2004.

II. M/C - Media and Culture
is calling for contributors to the 'open' issue of

M/C Journal

Call for Papers: 'open' - edited by Felix Stalder & McKenzie Wark

Since the rebranding of Free Software into Open Source in 1998, "open" has
become the buzzword for all things progressive on and off the Internet. Open
Law, Open Hardware, Open Culture, Open Publishing, Open Access or Open
Archives are just some of the many concepts which are being retooled to serve
the more or less defined public good in the Information Society.

Yet, at the same time, multinational corporations have become major actors in
the Open Source Software area and commercial publishers are beginning to
seriously look into Open Access model. In the background of the recent
enthusiasm with "open" lurks the "Open Society" concept of Karl Popper, whose
political preferences for Margaret Thatcher's neoliberalism are well known.

'Open' aims to take a critical look at this concept of the "open". Is it a
temporary buzzword that signifies nothing but an astute sense of
salesmanship? Is it an alternative social concept, or just yet another step
in making capitalism ever more flexible? What is it that makes something
"open" and are some projects more "open" than others? Is "open" always better
than closed? How does "open" relate to areas where we might value closure,
for example, personal privacy? Can we imagine an even more open concept of
social, cultural and economic life?

For the upcoming 'open' issue of M/C Journal, we are inviting papers between
1000 and 2000 words that critically examine the concept of "open" from any
perspective. We invite equally theoretical investigations of the concept as
empirical studies of particular projects with special regard to their
"openness" or "closeness".

Guest Editors for 'open':
McKenzie Wark, core faculty in media and communication, Lang College, New
School University, and guest scholar, American Studies, New York University

IV. Course "Rewriting History: Emerging Identities and Nationalism in Central A=
sia", Central European University Summer University, Hungary, July 19-30, 2004.

PROGRAM INFO.- Central European Summer University, July 2004, Budapest. The=
course will use interdisciplinary perspective to examine the phenomenon of=
Revising and Rewriting of the History in Central Asia. It will examine the=
roots of this phenomenon going back to the colonial time of print-capitali=
sm, which fostered the emergence of "imagined communities" in Central Asia =
and look at the problem from a theoretical point of view placing it rightly=
within the theoretical concepts existing in Historical Anthropology, Post-=
Colonial Studies and Area Studies.

The course will focus among others on such problems as the complex interpla=
y
between Invention and Mythologization of the History and Ethno-Nationalism =
as well as emerging new State based Identities. It will introduce the multi=
faceted debate on the nature of invention of the History and reveal its cor=
relation with state building, politics, and political regimes and show the =
role of History Writing in social and cultural life of societies during the=
transition period. The comparative analysis of the History Writing process=
in Central Asian states with those in other post-Communist societies (Cauc=
asus, Mongolia) as well as Chinese Central Asia (Xinjiang) will enable to r=
eveal general tendencies in the process of Rewriting of the History and des=
cribe it as a natural phenomenon for the contemporary post-colonial societi=
es. The course will give participants the skills necessary to apply academi=
c theories, concepts and methodology to their own researches and curricula.

V. Call for Papers - Extended Deadline

Citizens of the World:

Using Media to Introduce Globalization across the Curriculum

Across the humanities curriculum, from general education to upper

division courses, students are being asked to grapple with issues of

globalization and its repercussions. Out of these global changes, common

metaphors are emergingmetaphors such as borderlands and border crossings,

empire and transnationalism, to name a few. Such complex metaphors can be

intimidating to many undergraduates. This proposed collection explores

ways that media can be used effectively in a variety of classes in a

variety of disciplines to engage students with concepts of globalization,

connecting them to and among their general education courses.

Papers for an essay collection tentatively titled Citizens of the

World: Using Media to Introduce Globalization across the Curriculum

are invited on any aspect of the use of various media (film, music,

television, video, internet sites and communication, etc.) to introduce

students to globalization across the college humanities curriculum. How

can media help students conceptualize and analyze these abstract

concepts? More broadly, how can we use media to complicate and enhance

students’ understandings of race, ethnicity, sexuality, national

identity, and politics in a global context? How might media be used to

introduce students to theoretical approaches such as postcolonialism,

gender, transnationalism, ecology and environmentalism? We are interested

in submissions that successfully ground practice in theory in their

discussion of the integration of media and pedagogy in a world where

national and economic boundaries are becoming increasingly

blurred.

Essays should not be more than twenty double-spaced pages (6000-7000

words) and should follow the most recent APA Style Manual. The deadline

for manuscripts is November 1, 2004. The editors welcome earlier

submission and also invite initial queries. Tentative publication date is

November 2005. Please send manuscripts to Donna Dunbar-Odom

(Donna_Dunbar-Odom@tamu-commerce.edu) or Georgia Seminet

(Georgia_Seminet@tamu-commerce.edu) at the Department of Literature and

Languages, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, Texas 75429.
