LECTURE- Harutyun Marutyan, Mobilizing the Karabagh Movement, Jan. 22, MIT
On January 22, MIT Anthropology Program will host a lecture by Fulbright
visiting scholar Dr. Harutyun Marutyan, entitled "Rituals of Defence:
Mobilizing the Karabagh Movement (Armenia, 1988-1990)". The goal of the
lecture is to analyze the ways of people's overcoming the extensive
psychological and emotional tensions and pressures, grief and memories of
pain during the Karabagh movement. The lecture is based on visual materials,
particularly posters and banners of the national-democratic movement of that
period.
Dr. Harutyun Marutyan is Social/Cultural Anthropologist, Senior Researcher
at Institute of Ethnography and Archeology, National Academy of Sciences,
Armenia and Visiting Professor at the Chair of Ethnography, Yerevan State
University. He received his PhD in 1984, in Moscow, from the Institute of
Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences. Currently his research is devoted to
the role of historical memory in the 20th century Armenian identity.
