*Built Spaces. The Cultural Shaping of Architectural and Urban=20
Spaces. An Interdisciplinary Conference of Architecture (BTU COttbus)=20
and Cultural Studies (Humboldt-Universit=E4t zu Berlin) - Cottbus, 23-25=20
June 2004*
*Location:* Germany=20
<http://www.h-net.org/announce/geography.cgi?geography=3DGermany>
*Call for Papers Date:* 2004-04-28
*Date Submitted:* 2004-02-12
*Announcement ID:* 137018
The conference is organized in cooperation between architecture (BTU=20
Cottbus) and cultural studies (Humboldt-Universit=E4t zu Berlin). First o=
f=20
all, the production of space includes practical as well as symbolic=20
kinds of actions which are culturally specific and want to be reflected=20
as such. In addition, both disciplines have own theoretical approaches=20
to the problem of space which historically have influenced each other=20
again and again. Not least these connections between architecture and=20
cultural studies shall be revived in context of the conference. The=20
crucial questions we are concerned with can be summarized as follows:
1.) Which practical and symbolic kinds of action shape architectural and=20
urban spaces, and how do these spaces in turn form social and cultural=20
practices?
2.) To what extent can the scientific, theoretical discussion of space=20
intervene with the everyday practice of architecture and urban planning?=20
The contributions to the conference should refer to concrete objects and=20
some of the central aspects of architectural and urban spaces. All=20
contributions should be restricted to 30 minutes.
