Proposed for the 2004 Modernist Studies Association conference, October
21-24 in Vancouver, British Columbia, this panel seeks to complicate our
understanding of modernism's oppositional politics by moving away from the
Fascist / Communist binary. Papers on literature or art in relation to
less-studied political ideas such as anarchism, Fabianism, syndicalism, or
those leading to libertarianism are welcome, as are those reconsidering the
commonly accepted labels attached to some prominent modernists (Pound,
Eliot, etc.) and theorists of modernism (Benjamin, Lukacs, etc).
