CALL FOR PAPERS
Annual Graduate Colloquium
Department of English
York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
14-16 March 2005
Circulations: The Ins, Outs, and Abouts of Exchange
Principles of circulation underwrite a variety of literal and figurative
modes of exchange that pertain to discursive, epistemological,
ontological, and political negotiations and formations. Our colloquium
aims to query the many incarnations and mechanisms of circulation, and
encourage creative ways of thinking about economies and exchanges in
their broadest sense. To this end, what might it mean to be in or out of
circulation? How might circulation function to reinscribe and/or subvert
social and literary conventions? How does circulation operate to
partition and/or disseminate? What might an ethics of circulation entail?
As an interdisciplinary colloquium, we welcome submissions from a
diversity of academic fields. Possible themes might include, but are
not limited to:
* Economies and Markets
* Representations of Capital and Currency
* Power/Knowledge and Discourse
* Bodies and Diseases
* Blood and =91Race=92
* Borders and Diaspora
* Publishing and Reading
* The Internet and New Technologies of Literature
* Dia-lectics, -lects, -logics, and -logues
* Rhetoric, Ideology, and Propaganda
* The Gaze
* Memory
* The Gift and the Promise
* Logos, Topos, and Tropos
Additionally, this year=92s colloquium will include a panel devoted to th=
e
late Jacques Derrida. We invite any submissions that relate any aspect
of Derrida=92s remarkable lifework to the principles of circulation.
Abstracts for 20 minute presentations should be roughly 250 words in
length. They can be sent as .doc attachments, along with any further
inquiries, to <pivot@yorku.ca>. The deadline for submissions is 15
January 2005.
