Call for Papers

Political Fictions and the Poetics of Faith
A Graduate Student Conference

University of Leeds, UK July 10-11, 2004

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Syed Manzurul Islam, University of Gloucestershire

=93In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in=20
almost every
case gotten at second-hand, and without examination=94. =96Mark Twain

This conference will focus on the interplay of literature, religion and
politics. We welcome papers that examine textual manifestations of=20
sacred and
secular beliefs, and their relationship to one another, whether=20
harmonious or
conflictual. Participants may want to consider the dynamics of religious=20
and
political texts in communities, past and/or present.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

=95 Religion and cultural difference post-9/11
=95 Religion as an agent and/or opponent of (inter)nationalism
=95 Faith, literary form and ideology
=95 Canon formation
=95 Religious institutions and literary production
=95 Blasphemy, heresy & censorship
=95 Pilgrimage
=95 Missionary activity

Applicants are encouraged to interpret the conference topic broadly;
submissions dealing with all periods and regions, or from the=20
perspective of
any discipline, are welcome.

The Conference will be structured around themed sessions, each composed o=
f
three 20 minute papers.
