Call for Papers

Memory and History in Film

The Society for Cinema and Media Studies 2004 Conference, March 4-7,
Atlanta, Georgia.

Deadline for submissions: July 30, 2003

The session, “Memory and History in Film,” will look into the relationship
of memory and history and its representation through the cinematic medium.
This proposed session will address a range of issues, questions and debates
exploring the relationship between history and memory. We would also explore
the relationship between film and literature, explaining and evaluating the
issues most frequently raised on the subject. It also aims to raise
questions crucial to the understanding of how the cinema (re)works the ideas
of history and memory through representation. Therefore, the rationale for
organizing this panel is to trace the trajectories of these two
forces—Memory and History—always at odds with each other within culture.
What is the nature of this relationship? Is there a difference between
memories of the past and the past itself? How do individual and social
memories intersect? What do the sites of memory tell us about how events
are remembered and which are forgotten? How does memory become history?

Specific topics include oral history and social history, private and public
memory, myth and history, war and remembrance, popular memory and nostalgia,
psychoanalysis and history, memory and collective identity, and trauma and
memory.
