Symposia 2003/4 : Call for Papers
Beginning in Autumn 2003, the Centre for the Study of Location, Memory and =
Visuality will be running a series of symposia, leading up to a two day =
international conference at Tate Liverpool in Autumn 2004. The symposia =
and conference will be based around the core work of the Centre - the =
interrelated themes of visual representation, place and cultural memory.
There will be four symposia, the first in November 2003 and then January, =
March and May 2004. There will be three papers in each session and plenty =
of time for discussion.
Full details of the first event in November 2003 will be posted in early =
September. The Centre is keen to receive abstracts from researchers and =
practitioners, areas of interest could include a wide range of subjects =
connected to the role of the visual within notions of place and memory. If =
you are interested in giving a paper please send an abstract (@250 * 300 =

Centre for the Study of Location, Memory and Visuality
The Centre concentrates its work on the interrelated themes of visual =
representation, place and cultural memory. The intention is to open up =
this rich area and to focus upon how visual representations and practices =
contribute to the formation and negotiation of cultural memories and =
places, and how the combination of place and memory is manifested in =
visual form.
The Centre is interdisciplinary in its base, though as the product of a =
coherent set of interests it is a structured interdisciplinarity. The =
three core themes are wide ranging in possible subject matter, and the =
overlapping of boundaries, subjects and the necessary exploration of the =
spaces in-between all occur from the primary motivation of developing new =
ground.
The Centre for Location, Memory and Visuality is currently developing a =
number of publications, conference, symposia and exhibition projects. The =
Centre encourages interaction between subject areas, academic/practice =
projects and institutional collaboration. As a junction for constructive =
exchange, analysis and creative production the Centre invites participation=
from researchers and practitioners across the range of disciplines in Art =
& Design and the Humanities.
