CALL FOR PAPERS 

International student conference Central Asia on Crossroads in Bonn, Germany 
on May 2-4, 2003. 

INTRODUCTION 

Yadigar Foundation is an independent NGO working on the wide range of issues 
primarily with Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union, and other 
developing countries in Asia and Africa. Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, 
Yadigar promotes and supports the projects in the area of education and 
social development. 

Since its establishment in 1993, Yadigar Foundation has been providing 
financial and logistic support to the number of public and private schools 
in Kyrgyzstan, has initiated projects in several parts of the country aimed 
at helping the young generation to pursue a good education. As a part of its 
mission- to strengthen an academic cooperation between Germany and Central 
Asia, Yadigar Foundation has a scholarship program for Central Asian 
students and scholars to study at the higher education institutions in Germany. 

CONFERENCE 

Yadigar Foundation organises an international student conference Central 
Asia on Crossroads in Bonn, Germany on May 2-4, 2003. 

The main theme of this conference addresses the issues of history, 
state-building, culture, democracy and civil society, economy, conflicts, 
the role of Islam and education in Central Asia. 

All graduate and undergraduate students, and young scholars from Europe, 
Central Asia and elsewhere in the world, who are currently engaged in 
research relating to Central Asia and willing to participate in this 
conference, are encouraged to send abstracts of their papers to Mr. Rouslan 
Jalil via e-mail <rouslan@uni-bonn.de>. 

There will be four general panels at the conference, however, individual 
proposals and proposals on contemporary issues and events in Central Asia 
are also welcome. 

* Democracy and Civil Society 
* Conflicts and Geopolitical Realm 
* Intercultural Exchange 
* Education 

The participants should indicate in which panel they want to present a 
paper. Yadigar Foundation specifically encourages young scholars to submit 
proposals on the subject of education. Comparative analysis of education 
systems in Central Asian republics, the reforms in public education after 
independence and other related topics are particularly welcome. 

The aim of this conference is to gather the students in an academic forum, 
to enable the exchange of interdisciplinary views and opinions, and to 
establish a network of young scholars who are interested in Central Asian 
studies. 

The language of the conference is English and German. The papers presented 
in German, however, have to be accompanied with 1-2 page summary in English. 

The deadline for sending abstracts and proposals is March 24, 2003. Please 
send your abstracts as attached Microsoft Word file.

- Language of the paper/presentation (German or English only) 

Yadigar Foundation is unfortunately unable to assist participants 
financially, therefore they are responsible for seeking their own funds to 
cover all travel and accommodation costs. Students from Central Asia and the 
former Soviet Union may apply for travel grants to organisations like Soros 
Foundation, IREX and ACCELS. Yadigar, however, is ready to assist the 
participants to arrange accommodation at student hostels in Bonn and its 
surroundings at considerable student rates. 

There is a 10 Euro registration fee for students (participants) and 15 Euro 
for guests.
