AGORA SPECIAL ISSUE CALL FOR PAPERS:
"Fashion and Modernity"
"[H]ow great and poetic we are in our cravats and patent leather boots. .
=2E" =97Baudelaire, The Salon of 1845.
At least since Baudelaire identified the "heroism of modern life" and the
"advent of the new" with contemporary fashion, the culture and literature o=
f
modernity has revealed its complex relationship with sartorial fashion.
Despite a growing interest in the history and sociology of modernist
cultural production, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to
fashion, which has tended to be dismissed as a frivolous footnote to the
narrative(s) of modern experience. In a special issue on fashion and
modernity, Agora invites submissions that discuss the histories, functions=
,
and/or failures of fashion as a site of modern cultural production and/or
academic study. Particularly welcome are submissions which utilize
electronic and/or multimedia formats (i.e. images, audio files etc).
Potential topics might address, but are not limited to, the following
concerns:
-the relationship between fashion and modern aesthetics (ranging from
architecture and industrial design to the literary, visual and performing
arts)
-the links between fashion, urbanization, and "the metropolis"
-the function of fashion as a trope, theme or mode in popular and
canonical literature and motion picture
-the race, gender, and class politics of fashion (fashion as a potential
instrument of socio-political oppression/ expression/ cohesion/ resistance)
-the history and politics of fashion production and manufacture
-the theory of fashion (from psychoanalytic and semiotic to cultural
material treatments)
-the relationship between fashion and commodity culture (i.e. the fashion
show, the fashion periodical, the department store, etc.)
Forward submissions to Jennifer Shepherd on or before July 2nd, 2002, via
email (jls23@ualberta.ca) or by post:
