WEB RESOURCE- Zerkala Database, Inst. of Oriental Studies,
Halle-Wittenberg

Dear Colleagues,

The following internet resource is now available on the net and you are
invited to visit it:

Zerkala database:

URL: <http://zerrspiegel.orientphil.uni-halle.de>

Zerkala (in German: Zerrspiegel), "distorting mirrors", is a database
comprising published and unpublished sources on Russian colonialism in
Central Asia and the Caucasus (around 1850-1914) from archives in St.
Petersburg, Tashkent, and Baku in Russian, Azeri, Persian, and Central
Asian
Turki, as well as from Russian journals. The purpose of the database is
to
bring together texts and pictures reflecting the Russian view of the new

colonial lands in the south and the people living there, and vice versa:
the
way how Muslim authors from Central Asia and the Caucasus perceived
their
new Russian overlords.

The "home" of zerkala is the Institute of Oriental Studies at the
Martin-Luther-University in Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. It is a growing
database with currently about 400 texts and pictures. You are invited to

participate.
