INGESTATION
This anthology will combine new submissions with essay versions of papers
presented as part of the Ingestation symposium held recently at the Maine
College of Art in conjunction with the opening of the retrospective
exhibition of the work of artist William Pope.L. The anthology focuses on
relationships between food and contemporary culture, looking at issues of
cultural difference, community and consumption and ways in which current
artistic, scholarly, and literary practices engage with these issues.
We are particularly interested in contributions that explore ways in which
artists, writers, scholars and critics have come to focus upon the role of
food in contemporary culture. From its production and preparation to the
pleasures and problems related to its consumption, grappling with the
actual uses and symbolic importance of food has come increasingly to serve
as a way to open up all sorts of urgent issues regarding individual and
group identity. By means of the themes of food in particular and
consumption in general the collection aims to bring together a range of
voices from across several disciplines in order to probe these questions.
To this end, we welcome abstracts (of up to 500 words) for submissions
that engage with these topics from any thematic or disciplinary
perspective.
DEADLINE for Submissions: October 31, 2002
Please email or mail an abstract of up to 500 words along with a CV and
cover letter to:
