The History of Women's Writing in Turkey: Samiha Ayverdi

20 December 2013, Istanbul Åžehir University, Altunizade, Istanbul

Submission deadline: September 30, 2013

Recent decades have seen increasing scholarly interest in the role of
women in the intellectual history of Turkey. One of the many significant
outcomes of this research is that, alongside the focus on Ottoman
Turkish women's views as expressed in the women'™s magazines of the 19th
century, we have encountered diverse voices which express a variety of
flourishing ethno- and religio-cultural influences. This conference
seeks to discuss Samiha Ayverdi, one of the many voices in the history
of women's writing in Turkey.

Samiha Ayverdi, a prolific novelist and the founder of the Kubbealtý
lodge in Istanbul, is an enigmatic figure for many other women writers.
Publishing her first work in 1938, her unique voice represented a modern
mystic woman'€™s views vis-a-vis the pervasive "€œdaughters of the
republic" at the time.

The conference organizers invite papers that address Samiha Ayverdi both
as a novelist and a mystical thinker in the context of the literary
history of other women writers and her influence on women's writing. The
paper submissions should include a one-page (300 words) abstract and a
one-page resume (300 words.) Both Turkish and English papers are welcome.

Suggested topics:

1. Reading Samiha Ayverdi in the context of gender and mysticism,

2. Thematic and structural analyses of Samiha Ayverdi’s novels in
comparison to her contemporaries,

3. Samiha Ayverdi’s role and influence on the history of women’s
writing in Turkey,

4. Historicizing Samiha Ayverdi’s literary, political and religious
thought and practice in her time and place.
