The aim of the International Conference on Ottoman Istanbul is to
explore and trace by means of a series of international symposia the
historical, social, cultural and economic developments that led to the
growth of Ottoman Istanbul and delineate under what kind of conditions
the city became an Ottoman city.
As a crossroad for civilizations and an imperial capital, Istanbul was
built in the 4th century as the magnificent capital of the Roman Empire,
a status which it kept for many centuries. It was reduced to ruins,
however, when it was sacked by the Crusaders in 1204; it would not
recover its former glory until the Ottomans conquered it two-and-a-half
centuries later. Immediately after the conquest, the Ottomans initiated
an extensive building program that developed the city and transformed it
into a Turco-Islamic one. Nevertheless, current scholarship on the
city's Ottoman period is insufficient and far from delineating the
city's transformation.
Studying different aspects of this transformation is of utmost
importance for understanding not only the city's urban history and the
identities of diverse communities that dwelled in it, but also modern
Turkey itself. In cooperation with Centre for Islamic Studies (ISAM) and
IBB Kültür A.Ş., İstanbul 29 Mayıs University aims to periodically
organize scientific meetings that would shed an academic light on the
city's Ottoman centuries and support scientific activities that would
reveal the city's Ottoman architecture, economic development, urban
culture as well as its religious and social layers.
Other symposia and activities to be held along these lines will promote
detailed works on Istanbul during the Ottoman period and reach to a
large readership and audience. The focus of these meetings is the
historical, social, cultural and economic development of Istanbul during
the Ottoman period and its transformation to an Ottoman city. These
meetings will provide an inter-disciplinary venue for discussion and
idea-sharing by bringing together researchers who study the history of
this global metropole. As well known, several activities were organized
and costly feasts were held every year in celebration of the Ottoman
conquest of the city. Nonetheless, the dearth of detailed studies on
city's history is a striking irony. The symposium aims to compensate for
this scarcity with participants' scientific contributions which will be
compiled in a publication intended as a reference work for a large
readership.
