Dear Gonul,

My colleague Hakan Ozoglu at the University of Central Florida gave me
your information. I wondered if you knew someone working on Turkish
migration to Latin America, and if you could put me in contact with
them. I am working on a new project on climate and migration from the
Ottoman Empire to Argentina, and South America, between 1890 and 1930.
In my new book chapter, “Climate Change and Transatlantic Migration:
Local Adaptation by European and Middle Eastern Immigrants to the Arid
regions of Argentina (1898-1940),” I examine the adaptation of newly
arrived immigrants to the arid and semi- arid northwest and southern
regions. I argue that the permanent settlement of these arid and
drought-prone regions were largely due to settlement by Spanish and
Middle Eastern immigrants who were familiar with farming in dry and arid
regions. For instance, Spanish immigrants built irrigation canals made
from simple mud banks. Middle Eastern immigrants practiced dry farming
techniques through the use of specialized wheat seeds bred in North
Africa specifically for dry, arid regions.

Thank you for your time.

Cordially,

Yovanna
