_Middle East Critique_ Special Issue:
Orientalism, the Eastern Question and World War I in the Ottoman Empire
Guest editor M. Hakan Yavuz (University of Utah)
The First World War had historic and fundamentally altering
consequences for the Middle East. Yet, as we approach the 100th
anniversary of the start of this momentous event, it is striking that
there is no single scholarly study which examines the connection between
Orientalism, the Eastern Question (the liberation of Christian
minorities from the Ottoman Empire and partitioning the Ottoman
landscape) and World War I, even though the war was a turning point for
how Orientalist discourse was put into practice in terms of partitioning
the Ottoman territories and dismissing views that Muslims could run
their own affairs. The war not only produced a new political map and
state system, but also resulted in the deaths of millions of people and
the ethnic cleansing via forced deportations of civilian populations
from many territories.
For this special issue, _Middle East Critique_ invites manuscript
submissions that explore the social and political implications of the
World War I, specifically utilizing new theoretical and methodological
approaches.
Manuscripts should examine the war and post-war map of the Middle East
from the perspective of Orientalism. How did Orientalism provide the
intellectual argument for the Eastern Question? How did William
Gladstone, Cardinal Newman, Lord James Bryce, Arnold Toynbee or
Henry Morgenthau construct the images of the “terrible Turks” and
“vicious Muslims” in order to justify the British War efforts? What
was the connection between Turkophobia, Islamophobia and the European
desire to rescue the Christian minorities? The articles are expected to
focus on the intellectual origins of anti-Ottoman and anti-Turkish
political discourses in Europe; the events and processes in which these
ideas put into effect; the ethnic cleansing of Muslim populations in the
Balkans; and the Russia-European attempts to partition the empire
through the support of indigenous Christian populations.
The deadline for submissions is 20 June 2013. Authors should follow
the regular guidelines for submitting an article manuscript to MEC
(http://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?journalCode=ccri20&page=instructions)
Articles that are accepted may be considered for publication in the
special issue.
