Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the creation of the Central Asia Program 
(CAP), hosted by The Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian 
Studies (IERES) at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George 
Washington University, Washington DC.

A non-partisan initiative, the CAP aims to develop policy-oriented 
research on Central Asia by providing a space for discussion connecting 
the policy, academic, diplomatic, and business communities. Its research 
activities focus on four main axes: security, development, 
state-building, and regional environment. It calls for a 
multidisciplinary approach combining political science, sociology, 
anthropology, economics, history, globalization studies, and security 
studies.

By Central Asia, the CAP means the five post-Soviet Central Asian states 
(Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), 
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Xinjiang, Mongolia, as well as, in accordance 
with this broad interpretation, the Volga-Ural region, Kashmir, and 
Balochistan.

The CAP aims to get US, European, Russian, Asian, and Central Asian 
counterparts working together, by promoting various forms of interaction 
and joint projects. It organizes monthly seminars, half-day forums and a 
yearly workshop. It also publishes the Central Asia Policy Papers and 
the Central Asia Research Papers.

The CAP manages a "Knowledge Hub Project", which contributes to mapping 
the worldwide knowledge on Central Asia with a virtual library, links to 
online journals and news agencies, and academic and policy institutions.
