I would like to share news of my recent publication: Modernliği Dokumak,
published by Koç University Press, 2011.

The book would be especially useful for people teaching anthropology and
sociology in Turkey.

The book is a collection of articles previously published in English
translated into Turkish. These comprise ethnographic research conducted in
a village in western Anatolia in the Yuntdağ region, north of Manisa from
1998 to 2008. The village, Örselli, is famous for a women's carpet weaving
cooperative and is a member of the DOBAG project, which promotes the use of
plant dyes and indigenous design in handwoven all-wool carpets and cicims.

Articles cover the story of the foundation of the project in the early 80s,
the collaborative work villagers experienced with expats Harald
Böhmer and Josephine Powell, transformations in notions of labor and gender
in the cooperative's gradual decline as women weavers began to reassess the
benefits and drawbacks of the development project, which does not provide
them with sigorta, health and retirement insurance. Also included are pieces
on transformations in love and marriage, including elopement vis-à-vis
villager engagements with ideologies of romantic love and modernity, and
moral questions associated with culturally Islamic practices. The chapters
connect recent ethnographic theory to the experiences of village men and
women.

Kimberly Hart (Ph.D. Indiana University 2005) is a social-cultural
anthropologist who teaches at Buffalo State College in the Anthropology
Department.

All the best,
Kimberly Hart
