THE SECOND SELJUKIAN CULTURE AND CIVILISATION SYMPOSIUM
Science and Thought in Seljukian Era
(October 20- 23, 2011) Konya-Turkey
The advancement and entrance of Seljuk into Islamic world is as if
like a tale; this migratory community dominated an area of Khorasan
(Iran), Armenia, the Caucasus, Iraq and up to Anatolia in such a short
time like fifty years. They expanded their dominance by expelling Sii
Fatimiis from Syria, Palestine, the Hejaz and Yemen likewise they took
the Baghdad Caliph under control. They consolidated the area from
Kashgar to Jerusalem under a single political authority by uniting the
divided Islamic world. They commenced a new area of “raising and
expansion” of Islam by invigorating the receding Islamic conquests
against Byzantium with the “Victory of Malazgird” that they won
against Byzantium in 1071. When Great Seljukians lost their central
authority, their successor states were founded in Iraq, Kirman, Syria
and Anatolia. Turkey Seljukians was the most conspicuous among these
from both political and cultural aspect. There are about thirty states
today on the land where the Seljukians expanded once.
As far as the achievements in military and political fields,
the entrance of Seljuks into Islamic history represents the opening of
a new epoch in “science and thought” field. Seljukians inherited the
four-century old Islamic civilisation and advanced this civilisation
by developing to such ahead that it is possible to mention about a new
phase of Islamic civilisation between XI and XIII centuries; while
Medreses (Moslem Seminary) were widening with the support of
Seljukians on one side, Sufism experienced the period of denomination
on the other side. Kelam carried out its advancement with specific
arguments initiated by first Gazali, Razi, Perdevis New inventions
and discoveries were being made in the fields of medicine, astronomy,
mathematics, physics, botany, engineering. It is possible to emphasise
the scientific richness of this period when we talk about the 340
works written solely in tefsir field, more than 200 Islam jurist were
brought up, almost all of the classical books on Islamic information
methodology (usul) were written in XI century and on Seljukian lands.
As the era of Seljukin (XI-XIII) still is studied slightly “it is a
world of discoveries, bring up best scholars, as hodjas, students and
adjacencies are not known sufficiently, it is like a “light insect”
Seljukian era represents not only a peak but also the beginning of an
end in the history of Islamic science and thought; this civilisation
came to a standstill with the great impacts of interior revolts,
Batinis, Mongol invasion and crusaders. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar speaks
likewise for the civilisation of Selcukian which experienced
resurrection and invigoration in Anatolia among all these
destructions: “Seljukian Renaissance is like the springs under
unexpected blizzards”. It has been discussed for a long time in
scientific platforms that it was an unproductive period in the
development of Islamic civilisation in XII and XIII centuries, a
limitation in knowledge procurement and a change in thought structure.
We would like to discuss Seljukian era “Science and Thought” life at
an international symposium bringing the professional of the discipline
together in Konya, the capital of Seljuks, with the pioneering of
“Selcuklu Municipality” and “Selcuk University” with all aspects.
