Western Ottoman Studies Workshop (WOW)
We are writing to announce the establishment of the Western Workshop in
Ottoman Studies. This workshop series is in continuation with Great
Lakes Ottoman Studies Working Group (GLOW) which Fariba Zarinebaf,
Daniel Goffman, and Linda Darling founded in Chicago in 2005 and which
has had a number of successful meetings: Northwestern University (2005),
DePaul University (2005), University of Toronto (2006), University of
Michigan (2007), University of Notre Dame (2008), and Ohio State
University (2009).
The purpose of these workshops is to offer Ottomanists in the West (both
faculty and graduate students) the chance to get together, present work
in progress, mentor new scholars, and engage in broad dialogue with each
other and with interested colleagues in other fields and disciplines in
an informal and welcoming environment. The West offers unique
opportunities for comparative and interdisciplinary workshops with a
strong tradition of UC World History, the Mediterranean Research Group,
and UC Economic History group. The recent UC World History and MRG
conference at UCR (Encounters in the Mediterranean) in May 2010
demonstrated how useful it is to establish links with these groups and
foster intellectual exchange across fields of study. We hope that like
GLOW, WOW will stimulate an ongoing dialogue across the field and with
other researchers.
James Grehan will organize the first WOW at Portland State University in
Fall (October 30) 2010 and Baki Tezcan will be organizing the next WOW
at UC-Davis in Spring (April 8-9) 2011. The goal is not to sponsor major
conferences but inexpensive meetings with plenty of dialogue and
discussion. Please contact one of the organizers at the address below if
you are planning to attend one of the upcoming workshops.
