Sea Crossings: Rethinking Mediterranean Architecture and History

A symposium at the University of Virginia School of Architecture

November 19–20, 2010

The symposium aims to explore the conceptual and practical challenges of
bringing a broader geographic view of the Mediterranean to the study of
objects, buildings, and landscapes, with the hope of opening new avenues
for future research. While Mediterranean historians have recently forged a
revival of the legacy of Fernand Braudel, evident in many geographically
and chronologically wide ranging publications, these trends have been less
apparent in the history of art and architecture. Although there has been
a strong interest in issues of exchange, travel, and encounter, it has
tended to concentrate on particular axes (such as Venice-Istanbul) rather
than the networks of the entire region. The long shadow of nationalism
continues to exert its influence even in periods predating the birth of
the nation state. The symposium will bring together prominent scholars
whose work seeks to reshape the way the art and architectural history of
the Mediterranean is written. While specializing in different regions and
periods, from Islamic Spain to Norman Sicily, the Ottoman Empire, and
modern Egypt, the speakers share the ambition of expanding their
discussion across traditional boundaries. The speakers will include
Professors Molly Greene of Princeton University, Gülru Necipoglu of
Harvard University, Cynthia Robinson of Cornell University, Beat Brenk of
Williams College and Mercedes Volait of the Centre National de la
Recherche Scientifique, Paris. Erin Rowe of the University of Virginia
will be a respondent at the round table discussion.

Organized by Cammy Brothers, Sheila Crane, and Lisa Reilly and sponsored
by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs
