14th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF TURKISH ART (ICTA)

FIRST CIRCULAR

Dear Colleague,

It gives us much pleasure to inform you that the 14th International
Congress of Turkish Art will take place in Paris, at the Collège de
France, from September 19th to 21st 2011.
The organisers would like the principal theme of Congress to be the
Relationship between Turkish and European art. They ask participants
wishing to give lectures to submit abstracts on any for the following
topics (grouped under three headings):

I. Turkish Arts in the Empires of the Past
a) Art of the Book
b) Arts of Fires / Ceramics and Glass
c) Art of Metalworking
d) Rugs and Textiles
e) Architecture

II. Turkish Arts and Aesthetics in the Modernity
a) Scholars, Collectors and Collections
b) Orientalism in Art
c) Painters, Painting and Decorative Arts
d) Early Photography in the Ottoman Empire
e) Turkish Art Collections in Europe

III. Auxiliary Sciences
a) Archaeology
b) Epigraphy
c) Numismatics

The languages of the Congress:
The French Organising Committee requests those participants delivering a
paper to do so where possible in French, English or in Turkish (not
exceeding 20 minutes in duration). Abstracts should only be submitted in
English. All papers given in a language other than French or English
during the Congress should be fully translated into English and a copy of
the translation submitted to the French Organising Committee at the latest
in June 2011. Simultaneous translation will not be available at the
Congress.

Invitations to lecture:
In view of the great interest that is expected, the International
Organising Committee reserves the right to decide on the papers to be
given on the basis of the abstracts submitted. Adjudication will take
place using the blind evaluation method. Those submitting abstracts will
be informed of the International Organising Committee?s decision at the
time the Second Circular is sent out, in any event by October 2010. Those
wishing simply to attend the Congress (i. e. without reading a paper)
should notify the French Organising Committee of their intention to do so
by September 29th, 2010.

Timetable:
English abstracts not exceeding 1 page and no less than 400 words should
reach the French Organising Committee by May 30th, 2010. They may be sent
either on paper or electronically.

Registration Fee:
All participants will be charged a registration fee of 160 ? (80 ? for
students) payable once their paper has been accepted and preferably before
January 31st, 2011 (200 ? after this date). Details will be given in the
Second Circular.

Travel and accommodation costs:
All travel costs and all accommodation costs must by paid by the
participants. In the Second Circular, the Congress?s French Organising
Committee will advise participants of the various kinds of accommodation
available. It will attempt to offer as wide a selection as possible,
including, for students, accommodation in student halls of residence.
Young scholars up to the age of 35 years may request Financial support in
the form of Max van Berchem scholarships which will be awarded by the
International Organising Committee; applications should be submitted to
the Secretary of the French Organising Committee, who will then pass them
on.

Correspondence and abstracts:
The French Organising Committee will be pleased to answer any questions
you may have in connection with the Congress. The addresses for all
correspondence and for abstracts are given below.

The International Standing Committee of the Congress will hold its next
meeting in Paris, at the time the 14th Congress is in session. The exact
date of this meeting will be announced later.
