Location:Georgia, United States
Call for Papers Deadline:2010-01-15

The University of Georgia's Graduate Student Association Presents

The 10th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference

Health and the Disciplines:

Analyzing the intricate interactions and complex conditions of our localities, nation, and world

Conference Date: March 27, 2010

Abstract Deadline: January 15, 2010

 * How are the issues surrounding health and disease manifested
in your discipline, materially, metaphorically, or rhetorically?

    * How do the interactions and conditions of local and global systems affect the study of your field?

    * How are such interactions evaluated, analyzed, and predicted?

* What solutions and insights has your discipline developed for
addressing these issues and creating vitality in your field?

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Interdisciplinary Conference
held on the University of Georgia's campus in Athens. For this year's
conference the Graduate Student Association invites creative responses
to and a broad array of interpretations of the conference theme: Health
and the Disciplines.

Due to the growing national discussion about general health,
disease, insurance, and health care we are looking for scholars'
research seeking to analyze, evaluate, and describe the intricate
interactions among subjects in their disciplines. For example,
participators could analyze the condition of: individuals, societies,
organizations, families, businesses, nations, governments, the world,
the climate, communication, literature, as well as the physical,
mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health of individuals,
societies, and systems.

We encourage you to explore the website for more information about the
purpose of the conference, how to submit abstracts, and more specific
details about the conference. If you have any other questions feel free
to email us at ugaconference at gmail.com. We look forward to your
participation in this year's conference!

2-Writing Central Eastern Europe

Location:Poland
Call for Papers Deadline:2010-01-15
Date Submitted:
2009-12-06

Announcement ID:
172484

In his inspiring and provoking book, Larry Wolff analyses the invention
of Eastern Europe in the time of the Enlightenment. The question is
whether Eastern Europe as a concept existed earlier? What about the
nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first centuries? In what way can we
perceive Eastern, versus Central Europe, versus Europe over time in
history and where are their borders?
The Institute of History at the Jagiellonian University will host a
conference devoted to travel writing on Central, Central Eastern and
Eastern Europe. We are interested in papers on travel accounts,
diaries, letters, travel journals and alike presenting the
confrontation of travellers with the Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian
and Baltic peoples and their territories throughout history. Since we
do not define and do not want to define borders, papers on neighbouring
regions (Ukraine, Serbia, Montenegro) or indeed transregional travel
accounts will also be considered.
Please send 300 word proposals of 20 minute presentations, with a short
cv, to prof. Jakub Basista at basista at chello.pl by 15 January 2010.
The selection and draft programme will be made by 31 January 2010.
The conference will be held at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków on
11-12 June 2010. Language of the conference will be English and there
will be a conference fee of approximately 400 PLN (at present about 90
Euros). Regretfully, the organizers cannot provide assistance with
travel expenses, although modest accommodation (three nights
10-13.06) and meals will be provided for speakers.
The organizers plan to publish a selection of conference papers.

Zeitgeschichtetage 2010 - Conference of Contemporary History. UPDATE! Perspectives of Contemporary History

Location:Austria
Call for Papers Deadline:2010-01-15
Date Submitted:
2009-12-08

Announcement ID:
172533

The Zeitgeschichtetage (the Bi-Annual Conference of Contemporary
History) 2010 will take place from 26 May to 28 May 2010 at the
Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien (the Institute of
Contemporary History at Vienna University).

The main aim of the conference is to discuss and debate recent
developments in contemporary history, identifying new themes and
assessing the role and legitimacy of this field of historical research.

This event is designed to serve as an international forum for
the exchange of ideas about on-going research. The conference will
focus primarily on the implications of research in the field of
contemporary history: to what extent does this type of research make a
specific contribution to the interdisciplinary analysis of current
developments, whether economic, social, scientific, cultural or
political in terms of both national politics and geopolitics? Secondly,
the conference will analyse the discipline of contemporary history
itself. To what extent does contemporary history have a specific
interpretative authority and can its claims to be relevant in terms of
social policy and public debate be justified?

The panels will be divided into five thematic networks (tracks):

1. Contemporary History, Politics, Science and Economics

2. Contemporary History, Interpretation, Hegemony

3. Contemporary History and Culture

4. Contemporary History Between National and Transnational perspectives

5. Free Submissions (Open Space)

Submission of Papers
Papers may be submitted as
individual submissions or as complete panels. In the latter case gender
parity is desirable. Multiple submissions per person (e. g. one single
submission and an application as a speaker in a panel) are not
permitted.

Special attention will be paid to the integration of younger
generations of researchers and to their academic networking, as well as
to European and/or international research cooperation.

Conference languages: German and English. Each panel will be conducted in either German or English.

How to submit:

• Submissions must be made electronically to www.univie.ac.at/zeitgeschichte/zeitgeschichtetage by 15 January 2010.

• Submission must include an 800 word abstract for each paper. In
addition to this, panel submissions must include a 400 word description
of the panel topic.

• Panel submissions must be related to one track only. (Panels are not admissible for Open Space).

• Individual submissions must either be related to one track or to Open Space.

Acceptance:

Acceptance of panels and individual submissions will be decided by the
review committees appointed for each track according to a standardized
point-awarding system. There are bonus points for submissions made by
junior researchers and by scholars working outside Austria. In the case
of panel submissions, care is to be taken to ensure a balanced
composition with regard to gender and age. Abstracts will be judged
according to the quality and the methodology of the papers and the
degree of innovation of the topic. In the panels at least one paper
should deal with a herstory or gender issue. Special attention will be
paid to thematic coherence and to the interdisciplinarity of approach
and methodology of the submitted panels. Female presenters will be
preferred in cases of equal qualification.

Travel Bursaries
Travel bursaries will be made available
courtesy of additional sponsors, to enable colleagues from abroad for
whom participation would involve prohibitive expenses to take part.

Eastern Mediterranean University invites participation in the second
edition of Mediterranean Worlds Conference, an interdisciplinary
conference on the narratives of this remarkable region. What is of
express interest to this conference is the way in which civilisational
shifts, fusions, faultlines and oscillations of the Mediterranean world
have given rise to extraordinary interpretations, life-world strategies
and symbolic constructions. Such activity is manifested in the
remarkable literature and art, philosophies, religions, archaeological
readings, political theories and economic practices of the region.

ESF-LiU Conference The Responsibility to Protect: From Principle to Practice

Location:Sweden
Conference Deadline:2010-03-08
Date Submitted:
2009-12-09

Announcement ID:
172564

Five years after its acceptance by the 2005 World Summit, it is time to
consider the contribution that the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) has
made and could make to the prevention of mass atrocities.
The consensus among the Member States of the United Nations, as
reflected in the General Assembly debate in the summer of 2009 is broad
but not necessarily deep. While there is considerable general support
for R2P along the three pillars suggested by the UN Secretary-General
(responsibility of states to protect their own populations, assistance
and capacity building and timely responses), fundamental questions
remain. For instance: what does R2P add to the already existing
obligations of states and to the substantial arsenal of instruments at
the possession of the international community to prevent and respond to
mass atrocities? Does R2P entail a risk of opening the door to external
intervention? And how can R2P be operationalised and implemented in
concrete circumstances?

Knowledge of the impact of the principle is limited. Recent practice
shows both instances of where the international community succeeded
(Kenya) and failed (Darfur) to prevent mass atrocities, but in neither
of these cases it is obvious that success or failure could be
attributed directly to the use, or lack of use, of the concept of R2P.

Application deadline: 08 March 2010.

12-“Re-mapping the Renaissance: Exchange between Early Modern Islam and Europe”

Location:Maryland, United States
Seminar Deadline:2010-03-02
Date Submitted:
2009-12-09

Announcement ID:
172557

The Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies is pleased to announce
“Re-mapping the Renaissance: Exchange between Early Modern Islam and
Europe,” a 3-week summer seminar for college and university teachers
funded by the NEH. From June 13 through July 2, 2010 selected scholars
will explore the ways in which the European Renaissance was shaped by
interaction between Europe and the rest of the world, in particular,
the world of Islam.
In the course of this exploration of Islam’s contribution to the
shaping of the European Renaissance, we will investigate networks of
constant exchange between Islamic and European courts, rulers,
merchants, travelers, diplomats, and artists during the early modern
period. The seminar will demonstrate that the trade conducted by the
Italian city-states was not exclusively an inheritance from the Roman
Empire. Rather, it also stemmed from the civilizations of the Mamluk
and Ottoman empires and their thriving systems of foreign trade. Those
trading networks, in turn, became conduits for the export not only of
products but also of ideas, scientific discoveries, and artistic
exchange. This seminar will investigate that legacy.

Participants will enjoy lectures, seminar discussions, and
visits to the Library of Congress and the National Gallery of Art, both
in Washington DC. Time has been set aside each week so that
participants may pursue their own reading and research and consult with
the directors on their own projects. The seminar will model the use of
scholarship to support teaching.

The program will be co-directed by Judith Tucker, Professor in the
Department of History and Director of the Master of Arts in Arab
Studies Program at Georgetown University in Washington, and by Adele
Seeff, Director, Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies,
University of Maryland. Tucker and Seeff have worked across disciplines
and are aware of the challenges this sort of endeavor presents for
scholars. Both are interested in cross-disciplinary research and
teaching. Both are committed to fostering scholarly communities in
which seminar participants feel supported and nurtured. In addition,
three exceptional scholars will present sessions on cartography, art
history, material goods, and travel narratives.

NEW THIS YEAR: Two seminar spaces are reserved for current full-time graduate students in the humanities.

We hope that you will add your voice, your research, and your
teaching experiences as we embark upon this journey of discovery. The
application deadline is March 2, 2010.
