CONF./CFP- Interdisciplinary Conference on Semiotics, UM-Ann Arbor,
March 12-13
Posted by: Erica Feldman <ericapf at umich.edu>
The Semiotics Rackham Interdisciplinary Work Group at the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is excited to place a call for papers, media,
and performance for our inaugural conference on Peircean semiotics. We
invite contributions of multidisciplinary work that addresses or
challenges the theme of sign activity as constitutive and constructive
of nature and culture. In addition to scholarly papers, we invite
submissions from artists, performers, musicians, filmmakers, and
others whose work interrogates the processes and possibilities of sign
activity and the making of meaning.
Confirmed participants include E. Valentine Daniel (Columbia U.),
Terrence Deacon (U.C. Berkeley), Paul Bouissac (U. Toronto), and
Lenore Malen (Parsons/New School).
Please see attached PDF for more detailed CFP. This interdisciplinary
conference is not specific to Eurasianists, but some of the
highlighted themes may have special resonance for scholars of the
post-Socialist world:
- How is sign activity constitutive/constructive of nature and culture?
- Has the Internet changed our experience of the world/the way we think?
- What is the role of environment, material culture, language, and
mind in the development of the human condition?
- What are the conditions of posthumanism?
- What is the difference between material time and formal time?
- How do we describe the asymmetry between linguistic and cultural
encoding?
Send abstracts of approximately 200 words for review by the Program
Committee by 28 February to semiotics2010 at gmail.com.
