Workshop: "Language, Literacy & Authority in Islamic Societies",
Stanford University, March 3-4, 2011
The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University invites
submission of paper abstracts for a workshop which is a joint project
of the Abbasi Program and the Middle East –Mediterrranean Studies
Program at Sciences Po in Paris. Travel and lodging arrangements for
the workshop participants will be provided.
The workshop will focus on the processes underlying the social
construction of authority in Islamic societies and the way those
processes have been affected by issues of language and the development
of literacy from 17th century and onwards in the context of
peripheries as well as the core regions (specifically, West Africa,
the Caucasus, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East).
Please submit a brief abstract by 1 September 2010.
