Dear all,

As you all know, academic freedom is a very important subject for all of us and
it should be protected by the university community. On the other hand, some
issues are very problematic and controversial in academia because of
non-academic institutional involvement, such as in the case of the Armenian
issue. Non-academic actors (governments, special interests groups and lobbies
in Washington DC) have been manipulating the current discussion on the Armenian
issue since the 1990s and are pouring millions dollars into this every year.
Unfortunately, this issue has also become a business sector for some
academicians in the US. This issue is very similar to "The Militarization of US
Higher Education after 9/11;" also a case in which it was shown that the
government was able to influence and control academic thought.

I recently interviewed one of the most renowned scholars on Ottoman and Turkish
Studies, Prof. Donald Quataert on the subject of academic freedom, the Armenian
issue and Turkish studies. Please see the link to the interview at the SSF
think-tank homepage:

Best to all,
