Posted by: Scott Horton <shorton99 at aol.com>

President, American University of Central Asia - Kyrgyzstan

The American University of Central Asia ("AUCA"), an independent
institution of higher education located in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, is
seeking an outstanding leader for this expanding and exceptional
university, nested in a critical region of emerging strategic
significance. AUCA has evolved, since its founding shortly after the
disintegration of the former Soviet Union, into a valuable educational
resource on a cultural crossroads with a rich intellectual history and
a future of increasing geopolitical importance. The presidency of AUCA
offers a singular opportunity for a skilled professional to influence
the course of history by engaging in the education of the future
leaders of Central Asian society. Guided by an international Board of
Trustees and supported in part by the United States government and the
Open Society Institute, AUCA has established a record of academic
excellence in its relatively short, 16-year history, and continues to
be "the best teaching and research university in Central Asia,
distinguished by its emphasis on critical thinking and on faculty and
student research." The next AUCA leader, working with the Trustees,
faculty, staff and other committed stakeholders, will preside over the
building of a new university campus, perfecting an innovative academic
partnership with Bard College, developing respectful and valuable
relationships with the Ministry of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic
and with other local and regional universities and governments, and
supporting curriculum development, research and scholarship among its
outstanding, international faculty.

With a current enrollment of approximately 1,200 students from nearly
20 countries and 225 faculty (half part-time and half full-time), AUCA
offers students a quality education based on an American college model
with a credit-hours system, a liberal arts curriculum and a commitment
to freedom of expression and inquiry. The university offers eleven
(11) undergraduate (bachelor)-level educational programs and a
master's of business administration (MBA) degree. In addition, AUCA
offers college preparatory programs in English, mathematics, computer
basics and study skills. Nearly all (about 80%) of the prepare
students for the contemporary world where critical thinking,
communication skills, and life-long learning have become imperative.

This is an unparalleled opportunity for a higher education
administrator to lead a regional institution whose graduates will
compose an important part of the civic and business leadership for
Kyrgyzstan and the Central Asian region.

The successful candidate will need to represent the best of the values
of American liberal arts education, display excellent diplomatic
skills as well as cultural sensitivity. Fluency in Russian is
