Eighth Nordic Conference on Middle Eastern Studies, Bergen, 24-26 September
2010

The Nordic Society for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies invites papers to
the eighth Nordic conference on Middle Eastern Studies.

The Nordic Society for Middle Eastern Studies is an independent association
for researchers in the Nordic countries who work on the Middle East and the
Islamic World, and covers all subjects in the humanist and social sciences,
from antiquity to the present day. The triennial Nordic conference on Middle
Eastern studies is the main Nordic forum for contemporary academic research
in this field.

The conference will take place in Bergen 24-26 September 2010 under the
title: Middle Eastern Connectivities. With Middle Eastern Connectivites is
intended a focus on the relationship between the peoples and groups within
the Middle East and the outside world. The conference will emphasize
translocal relations and its effects on social, cultural, educational,
religious and other transformations. Furthermore, the conference will
highlight issues of trans-regional relations and exchanges to and from the
Middle East and Africa, Asia and Europe both historically and in the
present. The conference aims to explore the cultural, political, religious
and social changes resulting from these connectivities.

The theme is widely understood so that the greatest possible variety of
disciplines, theoretical or geographic areas of interest can be encompassed.
Thus, a prominent feature of the conference is to promote scholarly
contestations around significant issues, promote interdisciplinarity and to
create fruitful fora for discussion.

The conference will include several keynote speakers representing the
forefront of their respective fields. Among the inter-disciplinary themes
suggested for the conference are these pre-planned panels:

1) Migratory situations in the past and present
2) Religious transformations
3) Language and society
4) Adaptations in laws, norms and practices

We invite suggestions for further prepared panels, as well as individual
papers from scholars on relevant subjects, Individual papers will as far as
possible be organised in sessions according to themes.

The conference is organized by the Department of Archaeology, History,
Cultural Studies and Religion and the Centre for Middle Eastern and Islamic
Studies, University of Bergen in collaboration with Unifob Global and Chr
Michelsen Institute (CMI). Deadline for submission of abstracts: 15 January
2010. Deadline for registration: 1 March 2010. For information and
