International Summer Course: Islam and the Arts, Copenhagen, 2 to 29 July
2009.
The public role of Islam is at the top of the agenda, both in Europe and in
the Muslim world itself. One dimension of this is the issue of Islam and the
arts. There has been a perennial discussion among Muslim scholars about the
role, and even the permissibility, of art in its various genres. In the
modern era, new forms of artistic expressions, such as film and photography,
have been enthusiastically adopted, but the discussion about the proper role
of art has also continued. The course will give an introduction to Islamic
art and Islamic discussions about art, from early pottery and architecture
to contemporary films and iconography. It will include visits to art
collections and examples of the oriental inspiration in Danish art.
The course is designed for BA level. MA students can be accommodated. No
tuition fees for Danish and European students. Application deadline: 15 June
(we will accept late applicants). Organized by the Faculty of Theology &
Centre of African Studies, University of Copenhagen. Further information
